The ACT® Science Test has 40 questions which you must answer in a total of 35 minutes. This means that you must allot a little less than one minute per question. The ACT Science Test checks your basic science skills, including your ability to interpret, analyze and evaluate data. It also tests your reasoning and problem solving skills.
The ACT Science Test has three main types of questions:
Data Representation (15 Questions)
In these questions, you’ll be presented with a graph or table and asked to interpret what it means and draw conclusions based on the evidence.
Research Summaries (18 Questions)
In these questions, you’ll be required to read through the description of one or more experiments and tested on your ability to design experiments and interpret their results. You will need to have a thorough understanding of the scientific method in order to do well on these questions.
Conflicting Viewpoints (7 Questions)
In questions on this type, you’ll be asked to understand, compare and analyze conflicting viewpoints about an experiment or set of data (either presented as a table or graph).
Although the questions described here are of three different types, most of them rely on your basic ability to read an interpret graphs and data. While some science knowledge is needed to answer these questions, most of the test concentrates on your ability to think scientifically, rather than on whether you’ve retained all of the facts from your science classes over the years.
